Meet Zora Ball: The 7-Year-Old Who Built a Video Game — And What Singapore Kids Can Learn From Her

In February 2013, a first-grader from West Philadelphia walked up to a screen at the University of Pennsylvania and showed a room full of adults something they hadn't seen before. Her name was Zora Ball, she was seven years old, and she had just built a fully functional mobile video game.

The game was called Vampire Diamonds. You navigate a character, collect the diamond, avoid the vampire. Simple premise. Extraordinary execution — not because the game was technically complex, but because of who built it, and how.

When audience members questioned whether a child could really have done this alone, Zora sat down and reconfigured the entire application on the spot, live, in front of everyone. No script. No help. Just a seven-year-old who understood her own creation well enough to modify it under pressure.

She became the youngest person in the world to create a full mobile app video game — a Guinness World Record.

How Did a 7-Year-Old Build a Video Game?

Zora didn't use a commercial game engine. She used Bootstrap — a programming language typically taught to students aged 12 to 16, designed to teach algebraic concepts through game development. She learned it through an after-school programme at her school.

The point isn't that Zora was a prodigy who appeared from nowhere. The point is that she was given access to the right tools, the right environment, and enough encouragement to take it seriously. The result was a world record and international media coverage across CNN, HuffPost, and Black Enterprise.

She was seven.

What This Has to Do With Your Child

Here's where parents in Singapore sometimes push back: "But that was over a decade ago, and she was exceptional." Both true. But consider what's changed since 2013.

In 2013, a seven-year-old building a mobile game was a global news story because the tools required real programming knowledge, even at the accessible end. Bootstrap was designed to simplify things — and Zora still had to genuinely learn it.

Today, the tools are orders of magnitude more powerful. A child who can describe what they want to build — clearly, specifically, with some understanding of how apps work — can produce a deployed, working application using AI-assisted platforms. Not a prototype. Not a mockup. A real thing with a real URL.

This doesn't make what Zora did less impressive. It makes the opportunity more available. What once took a world-record-level talent to accomplish at age seven is now achievable by an ordinary, curious 10-year-old with the right guidance.

The Lesson Parents Often Miss

When Zora's story went viral in 2013, most people focused on the output — the game, the record, the age. The more important story was what happened before the expo: an after-school programme, a teacher who didn't underestimate her, a problem to solve (build a game), and a tool she was trusted to use.

The conditions that produced Zora's achievement weren't magic. They were:

  1. A real project with a real outcome (not a worksheet)
  2. A tool matched to her capability (challenging but learnable)
  3. An environment that expected her to succeed
  4. A moment to show what she made to an audience

These conditions aren't rare. They're reproducible. And they're exactly what we think about when we design programmes for children aged 9–12 at Dreambuilders.

Building Is the Point

Singapore parents invest heavily in enrichment. Music, sports, tuition, art. These are all valuable. But there's a category of learning that most enrichment programmes don't touch: making something from nothing and showing it to the world.

Not presenting a project you were assigned. Not demonstrating a skill in isolation. Building something you chose to build, that works, that you can share a link to, and standing up and explaining how you made it.

That's what Zora did at seven. That's what we believe every 10-year-old in Singapore is capable of.

The question isn't whether your child has the ability. Zora answered that in 2013. The question is whether they'll have the opportunity.
