Under 20 and Already Funded: The AI Teen Founders Rewriting the Rules

The mythology around startup founders has long celebrated the college dropout — Zuckerberg at Harvard, Gates at Harvard, Dell at UT Austin. The story usually goes: brilliant person enters university, starts company instead, world changes.

That mythology is being rewritten. The new version skips the university part entirely.

In the last three years, a wave of founders who hadn't turned 20 — in some cases, hadn't turned 16 — raised venture capital, hit unicorn valuations, and appeared on the covers of business magazines. These aren't flukes. They're the earliest signal of a structural shift: when AI handles the technical implementation, the bottleneck moves from "can you code?" to "can you think clearly about a real problem?" And teenagers, it turns out, can do that.

Here are three of the most compelling cases. Facts only — no inflation.

John Kessler Co-founder, Aaru Age at founding: 15

Aaru is a synthetic market research company. Instead of recruiting human focus groups and survey panels, Aaru uses AI agents to simulate how consumers would respond to products, ads, and brand decisions — delivering faster, cheaper research for companies that need to make decisions at speed.

Co-founder John Kessler was 15 years old when he built the technical infrastructure behind Aaru in March 2024. His co-founders Cameron Fink and Ned Koh were 18 and 19.

Aaru closed a Series A round in December 2025 at a valuation of $1 billion. John Kessler was 16.

The company now counts major brands among its clients. The 15-year-old who built the technical foundation for a billion-dollar company was, at the time, presumably still in high school.

Pranjali Awasthi Founder, Delv.AI Age at founding: 15

Pranjali Awasthi founded Delv.AI in January 2022 when she was 15. The product: an AI-powered research tool that helps academics, journalists, and analysts find and synthesise information from online sources faster than traditional search.

She had been coding since the age of seven.

Delv.AI raised $450,000 from venture funds On Deck and Village Global, reaching a valuation of approximately $12 million. Pranjali did this before she had graduated from high school.

The thing that's easy to miss in Pranjali's story: she didn't build a company because she wanted to be a founder. She built it because she was genuinely frustrated by how long research took, and she thought she could fix it. That orientation — problem first, company second — is exactly what differentiated her pitch from every "wouldn't it be cool if" idea that never gets funded.

Kavya Kopparapu Founder, GlioVision Age: 17

Kavya Kopparapu did something in high school that most PhD researchers never accomplish: she built an AI diagnostic tool for brain cancer that actually worked.

GlioVision uses artificial intelligence to predict tumour molecular subtypes from medical imaging — information that normally requires invasive biopsy surgery to obtain. The clinical implications are significant: earlier, non-invasive, cheaper diagnosis for one of the most deadly and expensive-to-treat categories of cancer.

Kavya was a junior at Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology in Virginia. She was 17.

She was named one of TIME Magazine's 25 Most Influential Teens of 2018. She was featured on CNN, ABC News, the Washington Post, and the Smithsonian. She went on to Harvard University.

She also founded GirlsComputingLeague, which has raised over $100,000, partnered with Google, Amazon, and Apple, and reached more than 3,800 students across the United States.

Kavya's story is important for a specific reason: she didn't build a consumer app or a social product. She picked one of the hardest problems in medicine and attacked it with the tools she had. The willingness to take on a hard, meaningful problem — rather than a marketable one — is a trait that seems to run through the most compelling young builders.

What This Means for Your Child

We're not going to tell you that attending a three-day AI camp in Singapore will put your 10-year-old on a path to founding a unicorn. That would be absurd, and you'd see through it in a second.

But here is what we do believe:

The capacity to identify a problem, build something to address it, and communicate why it matters — those are learnable skills. They're not genius. They're practice. And children who get that practice early, in an environment where making something real is the expectation rather than the exception, develop a relationship with building that compounds over time.

John Kessler was 15 when he built Aaru's technical foundation. Pranjali Awasthi started coding at seven. The children who end up doing remarkable things with technology almost always have years of "just building things" behind them before the remarkable thing happens.

The remarkable thing looks sudden from the outside. It almost never is.
