What Is Vibe Coding — And Why Your Child Should Try It This School Holiday

There's a new phrase doing the rounds in tech circles, and it's making its way into conversations between parents on WhatsApp groups and at school gates. Vibe coding. It sounds like something teenagers made up but it's also the most significant shift in how software gets built since the internet itself — and it has serious implications for what your child should be doing this school holiday.

Let us explain.

What Is Vibe Coding, Exactly?

Traditional coding meant learning a programming language — Python, Java, Scratch — and typing instructions for a computer to follow, one precise line at a time. It took years to get competent. Most kids dropped off before they got to build anything real.

Vibe coding is different. You describe what you want to build in plain English and an AI system translates that intent into working code. The phrase was coined by Andrej Karpathy, former head of AI at Tesla and co-founder of OpenAI, in early 2025. His point was that the relationship between human and computer had fundamentally changed: you no longer need to speak the machine's language. The machine speaks yours.

The name is a little tongue-in-cheek. You code by feel. By vibe. You describe the what, and the AI handles the how.

Why Does This Matter for Kids?

For years, the argument for teaching children to code was that coding was the literacy of the future. Learn Python, get ahead. That argument still has merit — but it's been overtaken by a more urgent one.

The children who will thrive aren't necessarily the ones who memorise syntax. They're the ones who can think systematically, articulate problems clearly, and iterate on solutions quickly. Vibe coding demands exactly those skills. When a child tells an AI to build them a quiz app about dinosaurs and the first version doesn't work quite right, they have to figure out why, describe the problem, and try again. That loop — build, observe, refine — is how real products get made.

The barrier that used to be "I don't know how to code" has been removed. What remains is the more interesting question: Do you have something worth building?

What Can Kids Actually Build?

So What Should My Child Do This School Holiday?
